Assistance with Obtaining EHIC – Health Insurance (EKUZ)

The European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) allows individuals legally residing in Poland to access public healthcare services in other European Union countries under the same conditions as insured residents of those countries. It covers necessary or emergency medical treatment during temporary stays abroad. The EHIC is especially important for people who travel, work, or study within the EU. Validity Period

Validity of the EHIC card

The validity of the EHIC card depends on your insurance situation. For employees on a standard employment contract, the card can be issued for up to 3 years. For contract work (umowa zlecenie), the validity is shorter and depends on the insurance period – usually around 6 months. For students and children, EHIC is issued for a shorter period, typically 6 months to 1 year.

How to obtain EHIC for employees?

Registration with ZUS

The employee must be registered for health insurance within 7 days of starting work. After paying the contribution, they gain the right to NFZ benefits.

Submitting the application

The EHIC application is submitted by the employee – either independently or with the employer’s assistance. The form is available on the NFZ website.
3.

Submission method

The document can be submitted in person at the NFZ branch, via ePUAP, by email (scanned signed form), or by traditional mail.
4.

Required documents

A completed application and an identity document are required. The NFZ insurance status is confirmed directly by ZUS.
5.

Card collection

EHIC is often issued immediately at the NFZ branch. It is also possible to receive it by mail at the specified address.
